Town strengthen squad

BRIDGNORTH Town were again left frustrated by the appalling weather after both their Saturday and Tuesday night matches were cancelled. Town were hoping to progress in the FA Vase against Stratford and pick up £800 worth of prize money.

TABLE tennis ace Damien Nicholls has ended his junior career in style by winning the gold medal in the UK School Games boys’ individual championships. The Quatford youngster’s best performance on record, scooping a national title, comes as he is already stamping his mark on the senior scene.

Death of rugby club pioneer

A founder member and past captain of Bridgnorth Rugby Club has passed away peacefully in his sleep in Canada. Phil Bladen, who was in his 70s, and had lived in Saskatchewan for several years, was a physical education teacher at Bridgnorth Secondary Modern School – now Oldbury Wells School.

Victory for golf pro Payne

Former Bridgnorth Golf Club assistant Martin Payne (above), who has been head professional at Cleobury Mortimer Golf Club for the past eight years, achieved another success at the Evesham Golf Club annual pro-am last week.

Disappointing derby for Bridgnorth

BRIDGNORTH’S poor run of results against their neighbours continued on Monday as they suffered a heavy home defeat. The disappointing derby was hauled into the visitors’ favour when Town ‘keeper Jaz Singh, on loan from Shrewsbury, was shown a straight red on 28 minutes.

Northgate swimmers were at the two annual prestigious national competitions held this summer.   Jacob Laybourne competed at the National British Age Group Category Championships and Stef Otto swam at the National Youth Championships.
