Tourist attractions up for awards

SEVERAL Bridgnorth area entries are among the finalists in this year’s Heart of England Excellence in Tourism Awards.
The Royal Air Force Museum at Cosford is in line for the Access to All Tourism award, and the Severn Valley Railway is challenging for the Best Tourism Experience of the Year title.

Pledge on tax and services

Services and taxes for Bridgnorth district residents won’t be hit, even though the council had £1 million deposited in a collapsed Icelandic bank, a senior councillor says. The council revealed at the end of last week that the money was in the Landsbanki, one of those affected by the financial crisis.

Cash boost for community groups

A number of community organisations at the heart of their villages have been awarded grants from the county council.
Nineteen groups from across Shropshire will share a total of £500,000. Successful bidders include the Red House in Albrighton, which gets £18,350; Alveley Recreation Association which will receive £15,000 and Quatt Village Hall, which also gets £15,000.

House sales up - but prices down

BRIDGNORTH estate agents have lifted some of the gloom on the depressed housing market by reporting a slight increase in sales. Mike Nettleton of Nock Deighton reported nine sales last month as against the national average of one a week.

£1.1m ‘pay’ for unitary councillors

ALLOWANCES totalling more than £1.1m are likely to be available for claim by the expected 74 members of the new unitary Shropshire Council next year. A basic sum of £12,000 for each councillor has been recommended for consideration by the county council.

Get fit fans boost centre

NUMBERS of people using Bridgnorth Leisure Centre have rocketed, according to the latest figures. The total for the first six months of the current financial year was 92,130 — almost 7,000 up on last year’s figure over the same period of 85,342.

Cash boost for youth bar

BRIDGNORTH’S only non-alcoholic youth bar has been given a crucial cash injection of more than £4,500. The money has come from a successful Three Peaks Challenge completed by Bridgnorth Baptist Church Men’s Group.
