SINGLE people need to earn a whopping £43,000 a year – twice the average county wage – to buy a starter home in Bridgnorth, a report has revealed. Getting a foot on the housing ladder is harder in the Bridgnorth District than anywhere in the county, says the draft housing strategy report for the new unitary Shropshire Council.

Get fit fans boost centre

NUMBERS of people using Bridgnorth Leisure Centre have rocketed, according to the latest figures. The total for the first six months of the current financial year was 92,130 — almost 7,000 up on last year’s figure over the same period of 85,342.

Cash boost for youth bar

BRIDGNORTH’S only non-alcoholic youth bar has been given a crucial cash injection of more than £4,500. The money has come from a successful Three Peaks Challenge completed by Bridgnorth Baptist Church Men’s Group.

New shops in pipeline

A busy Bridgnorth road will be closed to traffic for 12 hours on each of the next three Sundays to enable an electricity mains supply to be laid to the new Marks & Spencer ‘Simply Food’ store so that it can be open for Christmas. EON will be carrying out the work between 8.30am and 8.30pm on October 12, 19 and 26 and diversions will be set up.

First defeat for All Blacks

Bridgnorth entertained Ludlow on Saturday in fine sunny conditions, and suffered their first defeat of the season at the hands of their local rivals. Ludlow played an expansive game against an off-colour Bridgnorth side without skipper Michael Preece, and a changed forward line-up.

Taxi firm’s ticket fury

PLANS are in the pipeline for a taxi bay in Bridgnorth’s High Street — for evenings and Sundays only. The proposal for the space, which would double up during the day time as a loading bay, has been advertised by Shropshire County Council.

School changes heads

THE head of Bridgnorth Endowed School, Mrs Pam Chapman, is bowing out of her role at Christmas — but she won’t be spending much time with her feet up. After 32 years in teaching Mrs Chapman is taking early retirement, but plans to look for other opportunities to use her talents, possibly in the field of education.
