Furious Broome in referee blast.

Bridgnorth Town will lodge an official complaint to the Midland Alliance about the referee after slipping to a shock defeat away to Willenhall Town.

Bottom-of-the-table Willenhall snatched victory with a controversial last minute winner, when the ball appeared to have been kicked out of the hands of stand-in keeper Simon Gregory.

But that only tells a fraction of the tale, as Bridgnorth finished with 10 men when Richard Golding was sent off in a late mass brawl.

However their opponents were reduced to nine men - Tom Clews was sent off before the break while Jan Trapszo was red-carded along with Golding.

“The referee was not up to standard whatsoever,” claimed incensed Bridgnorth vice-chairman Steve Broome.

“The ref did not control the game at all.”

Broome claimed that the late brawl was sparked after a two-footed challenge on Golding.

He said Willenhall players began throwing punches after the midfielder reacted to the tackle.

Broome was also angered by a challenge that led to former Market Drayton Town defender Gregory having to take over between the posts.

“Our goalkeeper Chris Crook was taken to hospital with concussion from a kick in the head,” he said.

Bridgnorth created plenty of chances during the game to at least secure a point but were forced to return home empty handed.

Gareth Horler, Karl Griffiths, Phil Grove and Tom Whitney all spurned good openings.

With a goalless draw looming, substitute Matt Dorgan struck with two minutes remaining to beat the unfortunate Gregory and steal the points for the Lockmen.

It was the only the second win of the season for struggling Willenhall and leaves Bridgnorth wondering where their next point is coming from.

The reverse means Bridgnorth’s woeful run continues as they tasted defeat for the sixth time in seven games.

And Broome added: “We should have put the game out of sight.

“It sounds like sour grapes to complain as I have, but it was disgraceful and we will be lodging an official complaint abut the referee because he let Willenhall bully him.”

The result saw Town slip into the bottom four and the games are not getting any easier with a trip to Stratford Town tomorrow – a team they have not beaten since the turn of the century.

Town’s next three games are all away from home with Midland Alliance League matches split by a trip to Wellington Amateurs in the Shropshire Challenge Cup, on February 4.
