‘Defective’ road needs resurfacing

TWO busy town centre streets are to be closed to traffic for resurfacing over the next two Sundays – just over three months after the roads were given a top dressing.

A defect in the materials used in Whitburn Street and High Street have caused sections to deteriorate. A can has become wedged in the road in one of the affected areas.

“Work to enhance the streets was completed in November 2010, as part of a wider scheme to improve the look and usability of this important town centre,” said Shropshire Council senior highways engineer, Keith Jones.

“Unfortunately, sections of the new road surfaces have started to prematurely deteriorate and need to be replaced as soon as possible.

“As this has been caused by a defect in the material, replacement costs will be met by the council’s supplier.

“The two roads will not be closed at the same time and access will be maintained at all times for pedestrians.”
