Town unlucky in league

Town 1 Westfields 2

A strong Westfields outfit were the visitors to the Crown Meadow on Tuesday and although the result will go down in the history books as an away win it doesn’t tell the full story.

Town looked bright throughout and it was no surprise they took the lead in the 13th minute when Robbie Millington was felled in the box after his brilliant run was stopped by a poor challenge.Andy Rich made no mistake from the resulting penalty.

Westfields created a few chances but it was Town who looked most likely to score a second when a Rich Golding shot hit the bar, followed by a Mike Evans goal, which was ruled out for offside.

Town were made to pay the price for not converting these chances and allowing Westfields to get back into the game during the second half. Midway through a visitor’s free kick was met by Town defender Pip Hurdley whose header looped over Jay Nash and into the back of his own net.

With three minutes left, a cross came into the Town box, which was bundled into the goal by the Westfields striker. Assistant secretary Gareth Wilkinson said: “After such a resilient display against a side third in the league Town should consider themselves unlucky not to have gained anything from this match.”

Bridgnorth entertain bottom of the league Malvern Town at Crown Meadow tomorrow (Saturday), at 3pm, before travelling to Highgate United on Wednesday evening.

Town 2 Shawbury United 0

TOWN booked their place in the next round of the FA Vase with a comfortable 2-0 win over their Shropshire rivals. Kicking uphill the homeside could have taken the lead after three minutes when a Mike Evans cross found Robbie Millington at the back post, only to see his effort go wide.

Despite playing some good football Town had to wait until the 40th minute to take the lead. Andrew Pearson, who made a terrific overlapping run from left back to receive a pass from Lewis Sedgley, put a great ball into the six yard box, forcing the Shawbury defender to put the ball in his own net.

Town were unlucky not to double their lead early in the second half when Andy Rich saw his effort well saved by Damien Stevens in the Shawbury goal. But a few minutes later Evans latched on to a ball from Millington and his effort from the angle was brilliantly placed into the far bottom corner.

Town could have added a third goal when Rich and Anwar Olugbon were both denied. Jay Nash, a mere spectator throughout, still managed to produce a brilliant save towards the end, tipping a Shawbury free kick on to the cross bar.

For their efforts Bridgnorth have been rewarded with a home tie against Pershore Town in the next round, with the match due to be played on February 18.
