Town’s youngsters out of cup

Coventry Sphinx 1 Town 0

TOWN are out of the FA Cup after losing a two-legged battle against Coventry Sphinx. Despite fighting back from a goal down to earn a draw on Saturday, a few missed chances cost them dear in the end as they lost 1-0 away from home.

Manager Lee Mills said he was glad his side had not lost the physical battle but admitted a few players still needed to click. “It’s a pity really because I think we gave them to two good games,” he said.

“I got the impression from their players they were expecting to just walk over us – that it was a foregone conclusion. We’re still a young, developing side and we’ve only played nine games this season so things still need to fall into place.”

Mills said another major concern was seeing a growing losing mentality within the side. “I’m not particularly happy with that but it will come,” he added. “One or two pieces of the jigsaw are still missing.

“Mike Evans put some great balls into the box and we created two or three good chances without really testing the ‘keeper. Some of the players are still not on the same wave length but that will also come in time.

“We’ve got to be up for the battle with Shawbury on Saturday, as they came away with a good victory against Shifnal on Tuesday – and they’ll want to beat another rival in the FA Vase. But each game gives us the chance to iron out the few problems we have and we’ll be trying to win every game.”

Town’s next game is at home to Shawbury United in the FA Vase, at 3pm.

Town 1 Coventry Sphinx 1

TOWN survived, conceding yet another early goal to earn a well deserved replay with Coventry Sphinx. After only seven minutes the home side found themselves a goal down when Kyle Rhodes scored.

But the Crown Meadow men battled back well and were soon on level terms when an Andy Rich shot struck the arm of a Coventry defender in the penalty area. Mike Evans stepped up and made no mistake from the resulting penalty, confidently placing the ball past the ‘keeper on the half hour mark.

Coventry Sphinx had a goal ruled out for offside shortly before the half time whistle, but the second half belonged to Bridgnorth. Town had a goal of their own disallowed for an apparent infringement on the Sphinx goalkeeper. Anwar Olugbon also had a chance to secure a place in the next round but his effort was put wide.
