Curtain up for theatre revamp

A three-month renovation of Bridgnorth’s Theatre on the Steps  was on target to be completed by the end of this weekend. The new-look premises have seen a huge overhaul and now willing residents are needed next weekend to help clear out the remaining rubbish so the theatre can officially reopen.

Artistic director Iain Reddihough said: “The theatre has been closed since June and it’s been almost totally refurbished. We have a new stage, fly gallery, lighting, sound system and the gent’s toilets have been given an overhaul.

“The theatre’s been redecorated, painted and basically smartened up. The curtains and other technical aspects have been improved, as have the all-round capabilities for performance.”

The work was part funded by Shropshire Council  following a grant of £45,000, with further money coming from theatre’s own resources, tickets sales and local  businesses, bringing the overall figure to £120,000.

Mr Reddihough said the work was long overdue, with many facilities in desperate need of renovation. “Nothing like this had been done for a long, long time, but now there are a lot more facilities for the artists and performers.

“It should all be completed by the end of this week but now we need people to come in and help clean the theatre and move all the rubble out into the rubbish skip. We hope as many people as possible turn up on the day and get rid of the stuff.

“Once everything’s finished we’ll hold an open day at the theatre so everyone can see the work we’ve done, and what a smashing place it is. We have managed to retain the character of the theatre while improving on the technical aspects – people will see a tremendous difference when they look around or come for a show.”

If anyone can help clear the theatre next Saturday, September 12, from 10am onwards, they are asked to turn up at the premises or call Mr Reddihough on 07980 741569.
