A Bridgnorth teenager with the potential to play hockey for England has been recognised for his contribution to the sport at an awards ceremony in London.
David Devey, 18, was one of 35 young athletes to be presented with a cheque and certificate at the Jaguar Academy of Sport Bursary Awards event.
They were chosen after a rigorous selection process, conducted by SportsAid, which administers the bursary fund on behalf of the Jaguar Academy.
The final decisions were made by the patrons and ambassadors of the academy, who include the nation’s most successful sportsmen and women.
The best performing of the 35 young athletes will be topped-up with extra funding and will be presented with a prestigious award by the patrons in November.
David, who is a student at Bromsgrove School, helped England to a fourth place finish at the under-18 boys championships last year and also won a gold medal at the Four Nations Tournament in Seville in 2009.
His father got him involved in hockey at a young age and now enjoys coaching as well as assisting at school holiday camps.
His ambitions in the sport include playing in the Olympics and premier league hockey.
“David has a very good potential to gain selection to the senior international hockey squad,” said Peter Nicholson, the England hockey performance manager.
