Shirley earns place of honour

A popular Bridgnorth fundraiser travelled to London on Saturday for the unveiling of Breakthrough Breast Cancer’s £1,000 ‘Challenge Wall.’

23shirley.jpgShirley Rutter  – who has beaten the disease three times – has already raised £135,000 for the charity.

People who raise £1,000 or more have their names on the wall at the Breakthrough centre at the Institute of Cancer Research in Sutton, where scientists develop pioneering new breast cancer treatments.

“I am so pleased to have completed the £1,000 Challenge,” said Shirley. “I am staggered by the generosity of people – it is through the support of my fundraising that I have been able to come to the centre and see the groundbreaking work that the doctors and researchers are doing.

“It is a great achievement and I would encourage everyone else to take part in Breakthrough’s £1,000 Challenge.”

After the unveiling ceremony, Shirley had the chance to see her name on the wall and toured the research centre to see how the money is being spent.

Shirley initially raised money by completing a parachute jump and after her second diagnosis decided to live life to the full and to complete a trek in the Himalayas with her two children. She is a regular Bridgnorth Walk entrant and has taken part in various other walks and raised money through parties including birthday celebrations.

She has had a range of support from local clubs and had raised £50,000 by 2003.

The Breakthrough £1,000 Challenge has raised £15 million with more than 7,000 people reaching the milestone. To be part of the £1,000 Challenge visit breakthrough.org.uk/challenge or phone 08080 100 200.
