BRIDGNORTH’S Shropshire Councillors say they will put up a united front to fight a controversial plan to introduce parking meters in the town’s High Street.
The on-street parking charge proposal – linked to a park and ride service – was exclusively revealed in the Journal last week and resulted in a hostile reaction from traders.
“I would urge business owners and anyone else to write to the council to express their opposition,” said Councillor Christian Lea. “This is the last thing that Bridgnorth needs at this difficult time – it could lead to some shops closing and loss of jobs,” he added.
Councillor Les Winwood said he had received numerous complaints from business bosses and residents. He said the present policy, which allows people a short time of free parking to visit shops and banks, was working well.
“I feel that meters could be detrimental to trade,” added Councillor Winwood, who explained Shropshire Council’s parking strategy to town councillors this week.
“It is important that all the Bridgnorth Shropshire Councillors act together on this,” said Councillor William Parr. “I have had many people approaching me who have said that this is not the time to do this and that it would be mayhem.”
Town mayor Councillor Val Gill said that the town council would be debating the proposals.
Shropshire Council cabinet members are set to approve a new draft parking strategy soon and the consultation will take place over the summer months.
