Racer joins bike safety campaign

TOP motorcycle racer Michael Rutter will be mingling with bikers near Bridgnorth on Wednesday evening to offer advice aimed at helping to reduce casualties and deaths on the roads.

Michael will be at the weekly gathering of motorcyclists at Swancote, for the ‘Think Bike’ event alongside the busy Wolverhampton road.

The Alveley ace, who will be celebrating his 28th birthday on Sunday and is nicknamed ‘The Blade’, has won 26 British Superbike Championship races and also contested MotoGP and World Superbike Championship events. His visit was arranged by the Safer Roads Partnership for the West Mercia Police.

The partnership, which includes police officers, the Shropshire Fire & Rescue Service, council representatives and the NHS, will also be bringing along a converted ambulance with a wrecked bike on which a motorcyclist was killed, to drive home the dangers.

“The campaign aims to make motorcyclists and car users more aware of the risks that are present when they are out on the county’s roads and to also increase the level of training on offer to motorcyclists to help us reduce the amount of collisions we see on the region’s roads,” said Vicki Bristow, communcations manager for the Safer Roads Partnership in the West Midlands.
