Conceding a goal after three minutes meant Town were always facing an uphill struggle, which was compounded by three sloppy mistakes that contributed to the visitor’s dominance. The result means Town remain very much in the thick of a relegation battle, lying two places off the relegation zone.
Manager Andy Marlowe was in no doubt what his team had to do and hoped the return of some of his best players would help push the team in the right direction.
“To be honest we’re all disappointed because we conceded three bad goals, which were our own fault,” he said.
“When teams are not playing well against you and they’re still scoring it’s a bit worrying. They are third in the league and deserved to win the game, but we cannot keep making these mistakes. There haven’t been too many games when teams have scored good goals against us.
“We’ll have Zak Jackson and Jason Pike back for the next game. Dominic Heath also played his first game for a while over the weekend.”
Marlowe said as hard as the 4-0 defeat was to swallow his team knew they were in a precarious position and now was the time to roll their sleeves up and get a win under their belts.
“We are all in this together, we all take responsibility and we know we need to get some results as quickly as possible,” he said, “Although we were disappointed to lose in the manner we did, I think if we keep harping on about the game it can do more damage than good,” he said.
After conceding in the first few minutes Town began to come back into the game before Alvechurch struck a hammer blow one minute before half time. Town had strong appeals for a penalty turned down early in the second half and then had salt rubbed in their wounds as the visitors suddenly scored two more goals on 74 and 76 minutes to put the game well beyond their reach.
Town were due to play another home game against Studley Town on Wednesday and tomorrow they face a very tricky match at Coleshill, who are enjoying midtable respectability.
