Wing Commander Andrew Green – who will be at the ceremony at St Leonard’s Church on Wednesday (9.30am) – is now preparing to smash his existing record by driving at over 1,000mph.
His visit to Bridgnorth to reward the students has been arranged by Endowed School headteacher Phil Loveday, who said everyone was looking forward to “an exciting day.”
“I have a contact with the Ministry of Defence and two relatives who are in the RAF and I thought it would be excellent if he would come,” explained Mr Loveday.
Wing Commander Green hopes to attempt the new record in 2011 in Bloodhound SSC, a pencil-shaped car powered by a jet engine and a rocket.
If he succeeds in hitting the 1,000mph mark it would break the existing record of 763mph, which he achieved in America in 1997.
Wing Commander Green is a qualified fighter pilot, who is currently working for the MoD at Whitehall where he supports operations around the globe.
He is captain of the RAF’s Cresta Run team and is also a proficient skydiver, aeronautic stunt pilot and yachtmaster.
