QUATT will be bidding for a place in the quarter-finals of the National Village Cricket Club on Sunday when they play Preston-based Great Eccleston.
If they win the match, which starts at 2pm, it will take them one step forward towards fulfilling their dream of a place in the final at Lord’s in September.
Broseley v Quatt
QUATT travelled to Broseley for a local derby on Saturday in the Marstons Shropshire Premier League and moved up to second place with a win that puts them in good heart for a difficult trip to Reman Services tomorrow.
Barry Jones made an early breakthrough when Broseley dangerman Gavin Jones was caught behind without scoring. This started a mini collapse leaving the homeside 50-5 but with the dangerous Mohammed Mehboob still at the crease and looking good.
Quatt’s bowling and ground fielding was unusually below par and this allowed Broseley to get past 100, but when Craig Jones trapped Mehboob leg before for 69 the innings was effectively over and the hosts were all out for 132. Craig Jones took 4-33 and Gareth Jones 2-29.
Mehboob was attempting to win the game on his ow, taking the first five wickets and leaving Quatt in all sorts of trouble at 84-5.
When Nathan Hakeman was dismissed soon after the game seemed to be over with none of the order seeming capable of staying with skipper Adrian Evans who was stranded at the other end.
Richard Jones offered some resistance but not for the first time in his career it was left to number 11 Gareth Jones to show application to the cause, putting on 12 for the final wicket and staying with Evans who remained 70 not out as the target was eventually reached after 52 overs. Dean Robinson (36) was the only other batsmen to offer support.
Quatt v Allscott
ON Sunday Quatt hosted Allscott in the quarter-final of the Shropshire Star Village Cup. Allscott had already beaten the Green and Golds twice this season and were-soon to make in three out of three in a rain effected game at the Oval.
Quatt batted first and posted a below par 170 from the allotted 40 overs with Adrian Evans top scoring with 54. Craig Jones also batted well for 41 and Dave Street made a useful 25.
However, it was clear from the start of the Allscott innings that this is a form of the game that they favour and they made full use of the power play, with Starling and Jones smashing the ball to the boundaries with dangerous regularity.
They put on 91 for the first wicket before Jones retired not out. Starling was soon to follow for 48 after surviving a close run out appeal when he was in his early 20s and at a crucial stage of the game.
Quatt chipped away, taking regular wickets, but the damage had been done by the openers and the visitors eventually reached their target with six overs to spare and with three wickets in hand.
On Sunday Quatt welcome Preston side Great Eccleston to the Oval in the npower National Village Cup.
The prize for the winners will be a place in the quarter finals and one step closer to the dream of playing at Lords in the final in September.
