AN extra 700 NHS dental places are being provided for people in Bridgnorth, Broseley, Shifnal and Ironbridge, Shropshire County Primary Care Trust announced this week.
The places, which become available from this month, should mean anybody who wants an NHS dentist in these towns should be able to find one locally.
Previously, most people who have asked the Primary Care Trust for an NHS denstist have been found one, but often at some distance from their home. This has meant some patients unable to travel have had to pay privately to use a local dentist, or do without.
PCT spokesman Matthew James said the additional places were being provided as part of a rolling programme throughout the county. “The Business Services Agency which provides information about available places at dentists and local need provided information which has enabled us to make this increase in places we can offer.
“Based on this information, the PCT has been able to initially increase an existing contract to deliver NHS dental care for an extra 700 patients. This will be reviewed again in March 2010, with the possibility of further commissioning in the area if necessary. There is a phone number whereby people can register and will then be contacted to be offered an appointment.”
The majority of dentists in the four towns are taking part in the scheme, which should give patients greater choice.
Anyone wishing to register should call 07530 605125 leaving their name, address and contact telephone number, when they last saw an NHS dentist and whether they are in any discomfort.
Amanda Atkin, the trust’s dental commissioning manager, said: “This is great news for the people of Shropshire.”
