Councillors accused over traffic problems

Society chairman Michael Rainsford says that residents living there have to put up with the problems from 250-plus vehicles day and night using the single carriageway road with two blind bends and no footpaths.

He says the society has been questioning the Endowed School’s right to use the Love Lane entrance/exit for general vehicle use for the past three years.

‘In recent letters we were encouraged to believe that the new council were adopting a more sympathetic approach to the residents’ concerns, but we have this week been informed by that council that they no longer control this issue - it being an internal matter for the Endowed School and their governors,’ Mr Rainsford states in a letter to local MP Philip Dunne, school headteacher Phil Loveday and the Shropshire Council chairman and chief executive.

‘We find this statement unbelievable since the council are the site owners, the school’s landlords, the staff’s employers and the site administrators.

‘Even more important they are the planning and highways authority with responsibility for ensuring the traffic entering and exiting the public highway does so safely and at no danger or nuisance to the general public,’ he adds.

Mr Rainsford says the society can no longer afford to continue pursuing its complaint, but the taxpayers of Bridgnorth to appreciate the society’s efforts and ‘the total ineffectiveness of our elected representatives to respond to this issue.’

Tom McCabe, Shropshire Council’s director of development services, said efforts had been made in recent years to better manage parking and access to the school and leisure centre.

“This has involved the use of the Cliff Road access as a two-way controlled access and Love Lane as an exit only. However, in an attempt to address concerns of local residents, discussions are still continuing with the school management regarding further incremental improvements to parking and access arrangements, which would eliminate the use of the Love Lane exit other than for specific needs such as deliveries and emergencies,” he said.

Local Shropshire Council member Christian Lea said: “I am very concerned and supportive of the residents because of the pollution, fumes and dangers which include lack of footpaths.”
