It’s the Big Walk!

THE stakes have been raised for a Highley woman’s first attempt to complete the Bridgnorth Walk on Monday  after her husband bet £100 she wouldn’t make it round.

Jackie Preece, who is taking on the 22 mile trek with her friend Gaynor Dainty for Breakthrough Breast Cancer, said the challenge was laid down on the table over a Sunday lunch.

“We were sitting round the table and I mentioned that if I had thought about it earlier I could have entered the Bridgnorth Walk for charity,” said Jackie. “My husband laughed and said I only took the dogs for a walk and wouldn’t be able to make it.

“Suddenly there was a £100 bet being made by my husband and Gaynor’s husband and now we are looking for more people to sponsor us  or bet we won’t make it!”

Jackie and Gaynor have joined Shirley Rutter’s team of walkers who are raising money for Breakthrough Breast Cancer  something close to Jackie’s heart.

“Both myself and members of my family have suffered from it, so it will be nice to raise some money for the charity,” added Jackie, who lives The Beeches.

If anyone can sponsor or bet against  Jackie, they are asked to call her on (01746) 862852.

* SO many entries were received for this year’s 43rd annual Bridgnorth Journal Sponsored Walk that a few had to be turned away. Walk entries organiser Peter Davison said the maximum number of 1,200 had been received for the 22-mile trek from the town hall to the top of the Brown Clee and back to Bridgnorth on Monday.

The walkers will be started by the mayor, Councillor Mac Griffiths in the High Street at 10am.

Andy Rawlings, who won the walk for an incredible 11th time in a row last year, will be attempting to finish in first place again.

The biggest team will be ‘The Tribe’, with 80 people stepping it out for the 63 (Bridgnorth) Air Training Corps in memory of 16-year-old Aiden Brookes, an ATC corporal who tragically lost his life last month when a sandstone cave on the Hermitage collapsed on top of him.

About 250 juniors have entered the seven-mile walk which will start at 11am at Ditton Priors playing fields and will also take in the Brown Clee.
