Airport expansion ruled out

LOCAL councillors have expressed their delight that a tightening up of local authority policies appears to have ³shut the door² on major expansion plans for an airport on Bridgnorth¹s doorstep.

Claverley Parish Council chairman Peter Collings and vice-chairman Rod Parr met South Staffordshire Council chief executive Rolf Leavesley about Mar Properties proposals for Wolverhampton Airport.Claverley and Bobbington parish councillors have consistently opposed enlarging the Halfpenny Green site because of environmental, noise and traffic concerns.

“South Staffs Council seem to be firming up their policies, shutting the door on any prospects of expansion for commercial flights,” said Councillor Collings.

“Mar have submitted some draft ideas for an aviation park and South Staffs have been looking at what can and can¹’t be done without planning permission.

“They have sought legal advice and will be informing the owners and drafting a certificate in the coming months that will set out a framework.

“The council’s chief executive has assured us that we will see the draft for our comments  before it goes to South Staffs Council members for consideration and we are encouraged by that offer.”
