Residents win parking battle

RESIDENTS living  along a Bridgnorth town centre road have won a long battle to get parking restrictions outside their homes. Christian Lea, county councillor for Bridgnorth East division, has been campaigning on their behalf for the scheme in Cliff Road, which is  to be introduced next month.

“There are currently no parking restrictions in Cliff Road and residents have encountered many problems in the past, with vehicles being parked across ways to the rear of properties, as well as some being parked in the road for up to a week,” he explained.

“I recently saw a vehicle parked on the pavement outside one of the Cliff Road bungalows, virtually making it impossible for the householder concerned to get access to their property.

“As the residents’ county councillor, I approached the county council requesting a residents’ parking scheme be introduced to overcome these problems.

“I am delighted that the scheme has at long last been given the go-ahead and I am sure that the residents will be relieved to see it introduced after such a long wait. The county council will shortly be erecting the appropriate signage and placing the necessary lining on the road before the parking scheme comes into operation with effect from Monday March 9.

“Householders in the road have been given an information leaflet detailing how the scheme will operate, together with a map showing the extent of the scheme, which involves the introduction of a parking bay.

“When the scheme comes into operation, on-road parking will be restricted to within the parking bay and permits will be available for householders within the scheme, allowing unrestricted parking within the bay.”

Cliff Road resident Mary Fearnall said the possibility of parking restrictions had first been raised in 2002.

“I am pleased something is at last to be done,” she said. “We have waited a long time and been very patient. It has been difficult for families with shopping and children in their cars and with the extra traffic since the back entrance to the leisure centre was opened up.”

The county council had been hoping to paint double yellow lines along the adopted part of nearby Love Lane at the same time, but this has been postponed because of plans to surface dress the road early in the summer.

“Once this has been carried out the county council will introduce the double yellow lines shortly after to help prevent cars parking along Love Lane,” said Councillor Lea.  “The parking of these vehicles makes it difficult for residents and delivery vehicles gaining access to properties.”
