Mum’s play area campaign

A Bridgnorth mum has launched a campaign to upgrade and enhance a popular play area in the town.

Vanessa Voysey  plans to survey parents who bring their children to the Crown Meadow with the hope that action can be taken.

“The play equipment, which is close to two of the the town’s largest primary schools, St Leonard’s and St John’s, is a bit elderly and jaded,” she said, “There is a sign saying that those aged over eight must not play on the equipment, which can create difficulties if you have children in the eight to 11 age group.

“I’ve spoken to a lot of mums and what we would like is some form of adventure play equipment for older children, like the climbing frame recently installed at Severn Park,” said Vanessa, who has two children at St Leonard’s School.

Following her survey, Vanessa intends to approach the town council and the ‘Awards for All’ lottery grant scheme to try and obtain funding to upgrade the area.

“I agree with the principal,” said town mayor Councillor Brian Jones. “It is something that would have to be looked at by the council’s property and grounds committee and would also need to go through the planning process.”

He added that the council had upgraded play equipment from time to time after considering its budget.

The mayor said the council was looking at the possibility of a BMX bike track and skateboard park on the Crown Meadow, which also has the area for swings, a roundabout and slide.

Town clerk Rachel Humphries said that the land was owned by the National Playing Fields’ Association and was managed by the town council.
