A £450,000 scheme to enhance Cleobury Mortimer town centre is nearing completion and the official opening took place at the town’s Christmas Fayre on Saturday.
Shropshire County Councillors John Everall and Adrian Coles, with help from pupils of Cleobury Mortimer County Primary School, were there to officially open the scheme and to launch the new look to the town centre.
This linked in with the town’s Christmas Fayre and switch on of the Christmas lights later on the same day.
As part of this enhancement scheme the council have used top quality granite kerbs, York stone paving and diamond cut blue bricks to improve the pavements in the centre.
A pedestrian crossing has been installed on High Street and 20mph zone has also been introduced on High Street and Church Street following a request from the parish council to improve safety.
An important part of the scheme was the historical reinstatement of an area of The Old Market Place. This has required the sourcing of river cobbles that have needed careful selection and hand laying, to add to andcompliment the originals.
This scheme was jointly funded by the County Council and Advantage West Midlands at a cost of approximately £450,000.
Major Adrian Coles, Shropshire County Councillor for Cleobury Mortimer, said: “This is a great improvement for Cleobury Mortimer. This worthwhile scheme has improved the look of the town and I hope that it will encourage more and more people to visit and enjoy the area.”
Jon Payne, Advantage West Midland’s partnerships team leader, said: “The package of improvements to Cleobury town centre will make a real difference to the vitality of the town over the next few years.
“This package of improvements to the streetscape and shops will deliver a boost to the local retail offer that should encourage more people to shop and invest in Cleobury, strengthening its role as a market town”.
