Police target cruel conmen

Residents are being urged to “light up” with free, low energy bulbs being distributed by officers and to display postcards with the words “STOP – all valuables have been removed.

Officers are working with the Bridgnorth Community Safety Partnership and the Shropshire Fire & Rescue Service.

Sergeant Bob Matthews said that the West Mercia Police campaign followed a spate of distraction burglaries, which include recent Bridgnorth incidents.

Local beat officer PC Matt Picken and CSO Sue Eden are already active visiting homes in Alveley, and other towns and villages including Bridgnorth, will also be targeted.

“We want to raise awareness about bogus callers and what to do when they come to your door,” said Sergeant Matthews. “We are visiting vulnerable members of the community. The message is not to let them in if in doubt and ask for their identification,” he added. “They should have an appointment.”

Bridgnorth police have also launched a weekly PACT (Partners And Communities Together) surgery at the town’s library on Tuesdays (10-10.50am).

“This allows residents to drop in and express their views and concerns that can be taken up,” said Bridgnorth beat officer Richard Wood, who is manning the sessions with Community Support Officers Helen Oakley and Eric Gaytton.
