Cash boost for tourism

These include signage from the Severn Valley Railway Station to the town, the Riverside enhancement scheme and new interpretation boards to help inform visitors about the town’s rich cultural, industrial and social heritage.

The money, from the regional development agency Advantage West Midlands, will help fund the projects being led by the Bridgnorth Town Centre Management Partnership which is working with Bridgnorth District Council.

Councillor Les Jones, chair of the district council’s community improvement committee, said: “Tourism is the lifeblood of Bridgnorth town and the Better Welcome programme will help to make a real improvement to the town’s tourism appeal.”

Advantage West Midlands says while there is an existing signed route from the SVR station into the town, it is not the most direct and does not take visitors to the tourist information centre and the heart of the town.

The riverside scheme will be a new ‘gateway’ feature,  a place to sit and admire the views over the river of High Town. The site is one of historical interest, being the place where the world’s first passenger locomotive was built.
