Tourist attractions up for awards

Gareth Williams of Weston Park, near Shifnal, is a contender for the Outstanding Customer Care award and the park is also in line for the Taste of the Heart Outstanding Customer Care award, while Patshull Park Hotel, near Albrighton, is vying for the Large Hotel/Townhouse of the Year award.

The Olde Rectory at Broseley was a nominee for the bed and breakfast/guest accommodation award and for the self-catering holiday of the year award.

The winners will be presented with their awards at a gala dinner and ceremony at the International Convention Centre, Birmingham, on November 11.

The nominations come at a time when a survey indicates that Bridgnorth is growing in popularity as a destination.

“We targeted areas such as the railway station, castle and market on a number of weekends and spoke to a great many visitors,” said Lib Dem Parliamentary candidate Heather Kidd, who organised the survey by Bridgnorth Liberal Democrats.

“What immediately impressed us was the enthusiasm that many spoke about the town as a place to visit.  Most came from nearby areas in the Black Country, but we came across others from as far afield as Wales, Lancashire and even Western Australia.

“The vast majority stressed the beauty of the architecture and the floral displays as the major draw. On the negative side, the lack of toilets featured prominently, along with difficulties related with parking. Many also indicated that more events, especially for children, would provide a greater attraction,” she said.

Town councillor David Walker added: “Although the message coming back from visitors is positive, it does suggest that we need to think about new and innovative ways of drawing people to the town.”
