POLICE again urged people never to let cold callers into their home — or even to open the door to anybody they do not recognise or were not expecting — after a distraction burglary near Bridgnorth.
Two men claiming to be from the “water board” knocked on the door of an elderly man’s home in Meadow Close, Morville between about 3.50pm and 4pm on Tuesday. They said they needed to check his water and distracted the victim, who is in his 90s, in the kitchen. When they left a few moments later, the victim found money had been stolen.
The offenders left the scene in a gunmetal grey hatchback car, with a registration plate which possibly started either D57 or DS7.
A police spokeswoman said: “The victim has been left very shaken and upset by the incident and we would urge anyone with information or who might have seen the offenders or their vehicle in the area to please contact police on 08457 444888.
“In this incident, the offenders used the popular story of being from the water board, which no longer exists, but they can use any plausible sounding reason to try and gain access.
“If somebody calls at the door that you do not know, do not let them inside or even open the door, even if they have identification on them.
“Such offenders prey on elderly and otherwise vulnerable people and we would also ask that family, friends and neighbours keep an eye out for suspicious persons or vehicles they see in the area.”
