Fifth goal frustration for Town

“That was easily the worst first half performance I have seen since I’ve been here – I was embarrassed,” Bridgnorth manager Andy Marlowe said. “At 4-0 you’re thinking about damage limitation, but to be honest, with 15 minutes to play there was only one team in it.

“What really knocked the stuffing out of us was obviously the fifth goal because it didn’t cross the line and it shouldn’t have been given.”

Going into half time 4-0 down, Town made three changes — one of which was Gareth Horler. Now partnering James Welnitschuk up front, the pair started to cause some havoc and it was Horler who struck the first blood, converting a penalty on 55 minutes.

With their tails up Bridgnorth pushed on and five minutes later Welnitschuk went on a mazy run and slotted the ball home from the edge of the box.

And Town really believed they could grab one of the most unlikely points of the season when Horler went on a run of his own, again finishing well from just inside the area. But a late and controversial fifth from Highgate meant Town went home with a mixture of emotions and no points.

BRIDGNORTH continued their winning ways on Saturday and proved they could still produce the goods without performing at their best. It was not until the 40th minute that Bridgnorth ‘keeper Matt Lunn was called into action as he produced a good save.

The deadlock was finally broken on 58 minutes when a long throw-in was fumbled by the Dudley ‘keeper and Devon James was on hand to finish well.

Town soon doubled their lead when a long ball by Pip Hurdley found Andy Jordan whose first time effort was smashed into the back of the net. Town’s next match is at home tomorrow against Warstones at 3pm.
