But churchwarden Ann Davies returned to the grounds on Friday to find a window had once again been smashed, despite further precautions.
“Before we were upset, but now we are more angry than upset,” she said. “We were told to make ourselves more visible, so we cut the hedges around church, which looked really nice, but we have still been targeted. Where’s the respect gone for churches and churchyards? Can anyone help us apprehend those who are responsible?”
Mrs Davies said hedges around the church were cut following advice from police and they had hoped the new measures would be enough to put off would-be vandals.
“We really did not want to deface the church, but obviously we are now going to have to put grills on the windows,” she added. “We’ve done all we can and they are still at it, no one has seen or reported anything. It’s not like we’re living in the middle of Birmingham, it’s a small community and people just need a bit of respect.
“It cost us in the region of £400 last time and although this time round only one window was broken, it will still be around £100 as the windows are made from old glass.” Funding for repairing the damage comes out of church funds – parishioners’ pockets.
Police spokeswoman Maria Hawkaluk said the local police team in the area had been made aware. “It has been reported to the police and we are appealing for witnesses,” she said.
