Bridgnorth bike racks plan

Councillor Christian Lea has met Ms Kennedy to identify three areas in Low Town in his role as county councillor — two in Mill Street and another at Fox Corner at the junction of St John’s Street with Hospital Street.

“Bridgnorth currently has very poor cycle parking provision for local residents and visitors to the town,” he said. “By installing cycle stands in Low Town it will provide cyclists with a safe place to park their bike and hopefully encourage more people to cycle.”

Councillor Lea said money was available in the county authority’s current financial year budget for the stands.

“The proposals will go to divisional surveyor Brian Bennett to see if they are suitable,” he said.

Town councillors agreed on Tuesday that one of the former doctors’ car parking bays in High Street, outside Lloyds Bank, should be used for two cycle racks for a trial three-month period.

Councillor Connie Baines opposed the move as “a waste of money”, saying it would mean more street furniture and attract youths to congregate in the area. She added that she had seen two cyclists pedalling the wrong way down High Street.

But deputy mayor Councillor Malcolm Griffiths said there would be no cost to the town council and there was a general feeling that racks should be provided in the town.

“If there are a lack of cycles around there must be nowhere to put them,” said Councillor Paul Tacchi, who urged councillors to think about green issues.

“We should take up this offer from the county council,” said Councillor Adrian Tacchi. “We have been asking for these for five years – the Government are very keen to promote cycling in and around towns.”

Councillor Dave Walker added that Bridgnorth was on a major cycling route and every effort should be made for sufficient cycling sites.

Councillor Iain Seivewright said it would be more flexible to have racks at both ends of the High Street.
