‘One-way’ for Whitburn Street?

A £750,000 plan – which includes making a bottleneck Bridgnorth town centre road one way and widening the footpaths – is expected to take an important step forward next week.

The district council’s community improvement committee is being recommended on Monday to back extra funding of £590,000 for the Whitburn Street and Northgate enhancement project to meet a shortfall.

The money would come from part of the council’s capital receipts from selling land to enable the relief road to be built.

The Westgate authority has already earmarked £50,000 for the scheme, with a further £100,000 coming from Shropshire County Council and £10,000 from the town council.

A group of councillors has considered three options for improvements following completion of the relief road. Its preferred choice is to make Whitburn Street one way from west to east (from the Salop Street direction), with Northgate also being one way from north to south (from the Broseley direction), except for buses and cyclists.

The plan also includes wider footpaths and a loading/ delivery area in Whitburn Street. There would also be wider footpaths in Northgate to allow for more public space and seating.

Public consultation on the proposals have been put on hold until after the relief road is built. Work is currently on schedule for completing the relief road in late November.
