Pledge over factories

BRIDGNORTH District Council’s leader has stressed the importance of Stanmore Industrial estate to the area’s economy, following fears that some of the empty factory buildings might have to be demolished.

‘Non-employment’ uses are another option being pursued by owners Hickman Stanmore Ltd and their application for a gymnasium, creche and children’s play barn at the end of a large row of units, was given the green light by the council’s development control committee on Monday.

“We do not want to consider demolition at this stage,” said Councillor Yeomans. “We hope alternative uses can be found.

“Stanmore is very important to the economy of the town and the West Midlands area. There are some very successful businesses there, such as Grainger & Worrall.

“The current climate is very difficult for everyone and if we as a council can help we will try to do so.”

There are currently 20 units vacant on the estate and Hickman’s have told the council there has been no significant interest to take them on for industrial use.
