Roadworks shut busy route

SHROPSHIRE County Council has confirmed that a section of busy road near Bridgnorth will be closed for eight weeks from September 8. Shirehall chiefs have set the new date for the B4555 Bridgnorth to Highley road work at Knowle Sands.

The council had scheduled the closure of the road – by Severn Trent Water to replace a foul  – for the summer holidays, but this brought a stream of local objections from councils. Concerns were also raised about access for emergency services and school buses.

“We’d like to thank the parish and district councils for raising these issues,” said Councillor John Everall, the county council’s cabinet member for the environment and sustainability.

“We feel this really highlights the importance of local working, using local knowledge to arrange this work to suit as many people as possible.”

John Hurst-Knight, Shropshire County Councillor for Bridgnorth West, said: “We are pleased that an alternative date has now been agreed. “It is important for local businesses that access is maintained to all tourist areas for as long as possible during the busy summer holidays.”

Bridgnorth District Council leader Elizabeth Yeomans said that local councils wanted to see improvements to Halfway House Lane at Eardington to cope with the increased traffic that will be diverted along it.
