New loos a relief for visitors

VISITORS to the Bridgnorth area will be able to spend a penny round-the-clock thanks to seven new automated loos being sited across the district.

Bridgnorth District Council has done a deal with Healthmatic to provide all-singing, all-dancing loos which open, close and clean themselves automatically, all for the price of 20p a visit. The toilets will be available for use 24-hours a day: currently some visitors can be caught short after the facilities are locked in the early evening.

Steve Brown, head of the council’s leisure and amenities department, said: “The contract means us making significant savings on our toilet provision budget.”

The toilets – grey cubicles with automatic doors similar to those seen on the streets of major cities – will be sited inside existing toilet buildings where possible. They will be placed at Fox Corner and Innage Lane, Bridgnorth; St Mary’s Lane, Much Wenlock; Dark Lane, Broseley; Crown car park, Albrighton; Orchard Street, Highley and a location to be agreed in Shifnal.

They will begin appearing in the autumn, with all being in-situ by March, said Mr Brown.

The main Listley Street car park toilets in Bridgnorth will not be automated, but will have an attendant in place to check cleanliness who will also visit other toilets in the district. But opening hours will be extended to 6.30am-8.30pm in the summer and 6.30am-6.30pm in the winter. “They will also be as vandal-proof as it is possible to be,” he added.

Leader of Bridgnorth District Council Elizabeth Yeomans said: “I am pleased that the district council will be improving and modernising its stock of public conveniences across the district and providing increased availability of use throughout the day.

“The new and improved provision, supported by a cleaning attendant, will provide a standard and quality of service that Bridgnorth district can be proud of.”
