BRIDGNORTH’S long awaited Whitburn Street relief road is set to be built and in use before Christmas.
Supermarket giants Sainsbury’s confirmed this week that the start of work is “imminent”.
A spokeswoman confirmed that the project is expected to start next month and be completed after 20 weeks.
Agents for Sainsbury’s were on the site this week with Meredith’s Yard owner John Poole, noting final details.
“I trust that all is in place because there have been concerns that nothing is happening,” said Bridgnorth District Council chairman Councillor Ed Shirley.
“I look forward to the road being built and I personally hope that the follow-up work to refurbish Whitburn Street to make it more pedestrian-friendly will materialise soon.”
The road – which will pass near the hospital and link the Old Smithfield with Northgate – has been on the books for a number of years.
It is part of a major scheme by Sainsbury’s who are also planning to extend their store. There are also plans for a garden centre at the Old Smithfield site.
